The challenge of finding children contents for the Middle East

Established in Qatar, Al Jazeera Children Channel became the first entertaining educational channel not only for the Arabic market but also for the millions of Arabic children all over the world. The broadcaster is currently transmitting more than 130 monthly hours of a varied interactive programming for children. This represents 1,600 hours a year of fresh program acquisitions, in addition to their internal production.

Mazem Rifka, Head of the Acquisition and Extra Production Department of the company, talks in an exclusive interview with ONLY TELENOVELAS, Fiction & Formats about the challenges of this new, great idea and the opportunity that it represents for broadcasters and distributors all over the world who may provide the channel with related contents.

Which is the channel's target and objectives?
Our daily programming is aimed at three kinds of audiences: pre-school children, 5 to 10 year olds, and 10 to 15 year olds.

“Any product or genre that has educational values and gives a social contribution will be highly valued by our audience.” – Mazem Rifka, Al Jazeera Children Channel’s Head of Acquisitions and Extra Production.

We broadcast Arabic programs with all kinds of contents, such as animation, documentaries and live performances, all of them specially designed for these audiences. The channel's target is Arabic children from all over the world, as we know there are millions of them living in the USA, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. We believe they deserve both learning Arabic and keeping in touch with their motherland.

Dubbing is the key element
We are working with 10 dubbing companies which give us the highest quality. Dubbing is carried out under our careful supervision in order to support our editorial line. Thus, the editor cuts images of violence, nudity, drinking, cigarettes and drugs. Our objective is to offer a secure channel that can be enjoyed by children and their families.

Children telenovelas?
"Any product or genre that has educational values and gives a social contribution will be highly valued by our audience. Therefore, if there exists these kinds of telenovelas, they will be welcome to our channel," Mazem Rifka affirms. At present, they broadcast through Arabic satellites, but their strategy is to extend it all over the world.
