A "regionalized" global economy and a strong competition for audiences

.....

After decades of developing a traditional television and acquiring US programs, countries like Germany, Austria and Switzerland are slowly opening up their markets to the genre that characterizes Latin America.

In German speaking territories, tele novelas have an important position,” assures Dr. Conrad Heberling,General Manager and CEO of Dori Media International, with its international head office in Switzerland, doing business in more than 50 countries and its parent company DMG quoted on the London Stock Exchange AIM. Dr. Conrad Heberling keeps very close relationships to major and minor broadcasters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where telenovelas are increasing in popularity, as he informs ONLY TELENOVELAS, Fiction & Formats.

“The markets that traditionally used to do business with the US mainly are slowly opening up, reacting positively to popular genres and programs from other parts of the world, for example Latin America.”

The world growing together is a prime cause of the change

Just a few years ago, it was almost inconceivable for broadcasters in German speaking Europe to import TV programs or formats from other non European countries but the United States. What has broadened the spectrum? “On the one hand it was the competition among existing and increasing newcomer broadcasters, the ever more demanding audiences for innovative content and the failure of some of the US series among European viewers over the past years which made broadcasters learn and think to fill the gap with popular series or formats from other parts of the world.

"The markets that traditionally used to do business with the US only are slowly opening up, trusting other continents' acquisitions more, specially Latin Americans." - Conrad Heberling.

This was the hour and the renaissance of the telenovela in Europe. We took the opportunity at the right time” he states. Another thing Dr. Heberling highlights is that “Latin America has a long lasting history and tradition on how to transform the whole spectrum of feelings into telenovela programs and formats, which can be broadcasted on TV and stir up emotions. A telenovela is more than just a TV program -it is authentic emotions audiences all over the world understand.”

Northern Countries also want telenovelas

Northern countries are also looking for telenovelas because they see their success in the neighboring countries, and they are considering the acquisition of formats. What makes telenovelas attractive is that they can be used internationally.

Characteristics of the West European audiences
“It’s a very sensitive market where quality is of paramount importance. Dubbing must not only be done perfectly, it also must be treated very sensitively to make the series a success in that country. We’re highly experienced and familiar with the sensibilities, characteristics and requirements of the markets in Europe which do vary from country to country. We listen very carefully to what audiences and broadcasters in the individual markets request and what they require. Only the careful observation and the indepth knowledge of a market puts one into a position to lay the basis for a successful program sale, laying the foundation for a new telenovela boom. That’s why there are no big secrets, we only have to watch and we have to listen to act,” explains the CEO.
