Colombia
Transformation of the traditional production scheme. Miniseries on an upward trend

For more than a decade, Colombian telenovelas have shone thanks to their scriptwriters, actors and producers. But the way they are made, produced and sold today is set by a new scheme. Although the sales of canned products continues, the first priority is to sell scripts without losing their “control and essence”
in the adaptation process. Telenovelas continue to be the genre with the highest ratings, even surpassing entertaining formats, which are their strongest competitors.
This is now the key country for the genre to enter the powerful US market. The American networks NBC and ABC have purchased Colombian formats. The company Ventana Rosa owned by the famous Mexican actress Salma Hayek acquired the scrips of Betty la fea to be its sole adaptor for the American general audience, and it is currently being broadcasted by ABC, followed by the channel’s number-one program Grey’s Anatomy. For its part, NBC is carrying out the adaptation of Pasión de gavilanes with the production company Nely Galán Entertainment.

Telenovelas continue to be the queens of the national programming schedules and the main export product in the television industry. They take up an average 50% of the daily programming on the private channels RCN and Caracol, foreign titles airing mainly on the afternoon slots and national productions showing on prime time.

Telenovelas continue being the genre getting the highest ratings, with an audience that ranges between 25 and 29 rating points on prime time, even surpassing entertaining formats – their closest competitors.

One of the successful experiments are the remakes produced by the joint venture between RTI and Telemundo for the development of Colombian telenovelas launched in the country some years ago, like La mujer en el espejo, La tormenta, and La viuda de Blanco, which have been adapted for the US Hispanic market.

There is also the telenovela format created by Invento and produced by Teleset, Juegos prohibidos, which is aired by RCN and by moving away from the traditional scheme has captivated the national audience, averaging a 28-point rating and a 58- point share, according to Ibope. Besides, it has been sold to Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Guatemala, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Ecuador and Argentina, among other countries.
