The production of local telenovelas did not work in Prima TV because they lacked both the necessary infrastructure to develop a good product and the advice from an expert in programming. We visited the channel’s facilities and interviewed Ana María Bazga, its Local Production Director,

who says that their female target is well defined and gained, and that they have had a slot for telenovelas for a long time – 7 to 8 p.m. “They are an excellent choice for women,” highlights the executive, who adds that they are currently airing La invasora, though not having the results they expected because it has to compete with strong opponents on the same slot. The first telenovela to be broadcasted on their screen was Isaura, then they showed Rebecca, and at present they are airing Engañada, from Venevision, on the 4.30 p.m. slot. Engañada is a re-run that worked fine in the summer when viewers were at their homes all day.

Searching for series formats
The channel started broadcasting in 1997, it has a national range and since last year it is owned by SBS Group. Within Romanian Prima TV’s programming schedule, its strong point is the local production of formats, specializing in reality shows, entertainment and comedy formats because it is a channel that is characterized by a variety of contents. They are currently looking for series formats. “We have different formats, but as regards long series we don’t have anything yet. We also have a comedy with a local script that is very successful,” says Bazga. “We were the first TV station to adapt a format. It was from FremantleMedia, a drama that was produced during 2002 and 2003 and worked very well, that’s why we’re thinking about doing something like that again, being focused on keeping the female audience. We go for that target not with telenovelas but with series.”
