Little interest in telenovelas

The decrease in the interest in telenovelas in France is due to the fact that, for the time being, they are considered lowquality products,” states Amandine Cassi, Head of Research and Format Services at EURODATA / Mediametrie.

She explains it was thought that with M6 acquiring Rubi the doors would be opened for canned telenovelas in the country, but the audience’s interest rather fell off. Due to this, French producers and broadcasters are getting ready to produce locally and are considering buying the German version of Betty la fea to make their own adaptation. The success in the country is the traditional series Saint Tropez, from the Marathon Group, although some other productions are precisely from Latin America, like Los Roldán and Rebelde Way from Telefe in Argentina.
This is how the executive explains it in an interview granted to this magazine in the last World Summit of the Telenovela and Fiction Industry. She also says this does not happen in Germany, where telenovelas are a boom, like in Italy. “The story is just starting with Storm of Love, the telenovela that Bavaria Media TV broadcasts on RAI. But this is a normal process and maybe there is a future for telenovelas in France, since for a long time reality shows weren’t a success in the country and now they definitely are,” she explains, and adds: “In 1999, Big Brother was a boom in Europe and the French said we didn’t like reality shows. But in 2001, The Loft – an adaptation of Big Brother – was launched with great success. Currently we have a series that is like a telenovela.
Plus belle la vie on Channel 3, a public TV broadcaster, has been widely accepted, although it started slowly. We need to give some time to telenovelas so that they start being successfully accepted by the audience, points out the expert. Amandine Cassi is an expert in formats and responsible for the NOTA service, the constant tracking and monitoring system of new TV programs. Likewise, EURODATA / TV Mediametrie, based in France, is dedicated to producing international data banks for sweepings and TV ratings for more than 70 territories around the world.
