A successful creative
team, a technical infrastructure and the
release of the new company Caracol Internacional
are part of an ambitious expansion plan,
with which it hopes to grow stronger in
the next years as the great producer of
telenovelas prime time, co producer of
series and telenovelas in Europe and a
company that exports knowledge and talent
to make its products anywhere in the world.

aracol
has shown that it is the Colom-bian channel
with the most internatio-nal prospects and
the most watched one by Colombian people.
Nowadays it is leading the prime time starting
at 8 pm with two telenovelas copro-duced with
RTI-Telemundo: Angel de mi Guarda
and Pasión de Gavilanes. At
9 pm - the top prime time it is the
rating king with El Auténtico Rodrigo
Leal, a production of Teleset- Invento
for Caracol and it closes
with Pecados Capitales, from the writers
Dago García and Felipe Salamanca,
creators of Pedro el Escamoso.
According to IBOPE rating measurements (see
chart), all four telenovelas win at their
respective times against the competition,
RCN. Pasión de Gavilanes
is number one in several countries and El
Auténtico Rodrigo Leal has already
been sold in Latin America after only one
month of being on air and it has purchase
and adaptation requests through Fremantle
in Europe and Asia.

Camilo
Cano, president of Caracol International,
who restructured the channel
strategies during the last 2
years. |
|

A research carried out by IBOPE, showed that
Canal Caracol has had the highest rating,
since five years ago, when it got its license
as private and its fortes are telenovelas,
series, quizzes and news programs.
Opening
to the big markets
Its telenovelas make the difference in quality
and content keeping the traditional melodrama
and history for more than two decades by selling
successfully in the international market,
as Pero Sigo Siendo el Rey, Gallito
Ramirez or Caballo Viejo. In the
90s it was already producing and selling
titles, like Escalona or Las Ibañez;
but its definite consolidation in making and
exporting was at the end of the 90s,
when it innovated in plots with much more
universal and contemporary stories, some of
which include foreign actors. Its product
shows that change to a more global one, which
definitely increased sales internationally,
although it has also been questioned by national
critics, precisely for lacking local or Colombian
style.
International
Alliances
In the last years Caracol has made important
negotiations. First it made alliances with
Telemundo and RTI in 2001 for co producing
telenovelas. From these negotiations titles
like Amantes del Desierto, La Venganza,
Pasión de Gavilanes, and Angel
de mi Guarda have already turned into
internationally successful productions, reaching
ratings between 30 and 35 points. Simultaneously,
Tepuy started the distribution of its
products for Latin America and Venevision
Internacional did the same for Asia and
other markets. But nowadays it sells directly.
Change
of strategies
For 2004 its project is more ambitious and
offers the international market a bigger amount
of productions. For this purpose it has created
Caracol Internacional, a company with
its head office in Miami, directed by chief
executive of Grupo Bavaría.
Camilo Cano, who has finance and international
relationships studies and who had been working
as an advisor to Paulo Laserna, president
of the channel.

Pasion
de Gavilanes, is a story co-produced
with telemundo from the USA. |

Today, Canal Caracol, has a production center
with four studios of its own three
of 500 m2 and one of 1000 m2, which will enable
the production of more than 800 hours of telenovelas
and series of which 60% goes to prime times.
Cooperating
with program pla-nning and producing in inter-national
markets
What are your expectations as the new president
of Caracol Internacional?
Consolidating the work deve-loped by
Tepuy. The Colombian product owes a lot to
the work leaded for years by Marcos Santana
and his group. But now, Caracol is not only
producing telenovelas but also expanding eagerly
and we have great expectations with the new
Canal Internacional, co producing with Europe
and exporting the knowledge to produce our
products anywhere in the world. We are ready
to sell the formats, the great international
comedy festivals that we have successfully
organized for years, movies, theatre, music
among other products and services said
Cano.
Caracol Internacional has wide development
possibilities because Colombia is a synonym
of success in show business and entertainment.
With the channel and the associated
producers creative ability we
know we have talents similar to Juanes
and Shakira in the telenovela,
comedy, and series fields. No Latin product
will be as successful as Caracols and
it is a bet we are going to win. The demand
of this kind of product is growing fast worldwide.
I assure we have a delicious sauce for an
old recipe that the world must taste,
concluded the expert in the television business.

In opposition to the readaptation tendency
that sooner than late ends with the industry,
this company has authors and writers to create
what the audience needs: good plots and fresh
and well told stories. Caracol Internatcionals
debut in Natpe 2004 includes the offer for
the whole year of content for the prime time,
such as La Heredera, with scripts by
the Mexican Guenía Argomedano,
starred by Aura Cristina Geithner (actress
of Gata Salvaje), Gaby Espino (from
Enamorada) and Christian Meier,
among others. Mesa para Tres, an exquisite
love recipe starred by Catalina Aristizabal
(Colombian), Diego Cadavid (Colombian)
and Hector Redondo (Mexican), with
a script by Jorge Hiller, Rafael
Rojas and Claudia Sánchez,
El Auténtico Rodrigo Leal, written
and produced by Juana Uribe (producer
of Betty la Fea and La Babysitter)
and the new super production Dora La Celadora
written by Felipe Salamanca and Dago
García (Pedro el Escamoso)
will be available in the second half of 2004.
